On Wednesday, the UFC announced that MMA's pound for pound best fighter Anderson Silva will return to the octagon to defend his middleweight title against Chris Weidman. According to a March 7th report by UFC.com, this fight will headline UFC 162 on July 6th from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Silva (33-4) is 16-0 in the UFC and looks to dispatch of top contender Chris Weidman (9-0), who's also undefeated in the UFC at 5-0. This is the first fight for Silva since his October 2012 victory. He holds many UFC records and looks to extend them all.
Weidman got the title shot after the top contender Michael Bisping was knocked out by Vitor Belfort. Weidman, a former D-1 All-American wrestler, has some impressive wins over top dividional opponents like Mark Munoz and Demian Maia.
The UFC has also announced the following fights for UFC 162:
Tim Boetsch vs. Mark Munoz
Roger Gracie vs. Tim Kennedy
Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante vs. Thiago Silva
UFC 162 will be live on PPV. Additionally, more fights will be announced over the next few months. Non-PPV preliminary bouts will be televised on FX and FaceBook.
