The summer's been great in New York! It hasn't been too too hot, which has been so nice. I've seen a few really stellar theater performances, and a some of those were part of The Comic Book Theater Festival at the Brick Theater where my play REPORTER GIRL was also produced. Because of the festival, I got to hang out in Williamsburg, something I haven't really done yet. The train situation has kept me away for years, and oddly enough it was indeed out of service the weekend that my play opened (now that must be karma). In addition to having a great time at the Brick Theater, I discovered some new treats -- a hole -in-the-wall Mexican place called Yola's on Metropolitan. It has the most authentic Mexican food I've tasted since living in NYC, and I've been here for 11 years!
So what's coming up in the next few weeks that's fun in NYC? Thankfully and not surprsingly, there's a ton of fun things to do this summer. Here's my advice:
Empty pockets? Never fear:
The Driling Company presents Shakespeare In A Parking Lot,....yo, it's free!
Low on Cash? Try these options:
The Brick Theater is in the midst of another great festival, and I'm sure by the title alone you will know if this is you or not. Tickets are only $15 per show.
The New York International Fringe Festival, tickets are not more than $18 and the shows are weird, fierce and fun.
Have a little more to spend? Try this:
My friend Anya Migdal has started her own theater company, Hero Theater. On August 8th, Anya, along with some noteable cast members will perform a reading of The Three Sisters, one of my favorite plays. Olympia Dukakis is hosting the evening and there will be cocktails included for the price. Tickets are $40, but remember it's a benefit to support a new theater, so it's tax-deductible.
The Naked Angels is presenting a staged reading of Warren Leight's Tony Award Winning play The Side Man. It sounds star-studded, if that's what you're into. Tickets are $100.
And If You're Just Rolling In it :
Go see War Horse!
