Summer is still going strong, and so are great dances to put some kick in those lazy summer days! Besides the summer dance series that were talked about in my last article, there are a couple events coming up as well.
Miss Jubilee will be returning to The Fizz on Monday, July 28. This band is quite familiar with what tune swing dancers need to get out there and have a good time! The evening will start with an hour beginner lesson at 8 p.m. Open dancing will follow until your feet fall off, or 1 a.m.; whichever comes first. Parking is limited. Admission is $10, or $7 for students. There’s nothing like this downtown Chicago scene, and a live band is the perfect excuse to go check it out!
Dance The Bix has gotten the backing it needs, thanks to Kickstarter, and will be happening August 1-3 this year. Quad City Social Dancing (qcsoda), with the Bix Jazz Festival, puts on this festival every year in Davenport, IA. The workshops include many of the styles of dance that lend themselves well to being learned at any Lindy Hop festival including Balboa, Charleston, Shag, and of course Lindy Hop. There will also be classes on some of the popular line dances such as the Shim Sham, and Big Apple. When you aren’t in a class, you can be going to any one of the numerous live Jazz bands, or even participating in a dancing flash mob! Pre-registration ends July 28, but it is possible to pay at the door if need be.
Big festivals, like Dance The Bix, are a great way to test your skills on dancers from all over. You may be the best dancer in your home scene, but when you step out you could actually be only at an intermediate level. Or possibly you think you’re just alright, but you come to one of these and dancers from all over complement you, and ask you to join them in higher level classes! Admittedly, Iowa is a bit far. But at least until Rockford gets a solid dance festival going, a bit of driving is worth the reward.
