Garden lovers may have just missed the start of the Dovecote Summer Lecture Series in Cashiers, N.C., but there are still 13 more lectures to go. And some of the information shared by the guest lecturers in the past can now be found online thanks to the Atlanta Landscape Design Examiner's coverage of the events.
For example, on June 17 the Examiner was told by Mary Palmer Dargan (the brainchild behind the Dovecote Garden Summer Lecture Series), that last Thursday's guest speaker was Dahlia expert Erin Dillard Watson, of Scotlyn's Yard Nursery, who shared this information about Dahlias:
They bloom from late May till frost. They have eight genes, so they vary in height, color and form more than most plants. And height can be as short as 12-inches or as tall as 8-feet! And they need sun, water and fertilizer to keep blooming, because they are heavy feeders."
Watson's Dahlia garden talk was preceded by Clemson horticulture graduate Jeff Zahner, owner of Chattooga Gardens in Cashiers, who spoke to those in attendance on June 5 about "Mountain Hedges."
The remaining summer lecture series includes Dovecote's Grand Opening Weekend on June 27-29; "Elderflower Cordial Making" by Mary Palmer Dargan on July 3; "Create a Garden Party Hat" on July 10; An art breakthrough workshop led by Eve Tidwell on July 17; a "Floral Design Workshop" held by Jodie Zahner and "Magic Mix" by Mary Palmer Dargan on July 31.
In addition August lectures will include guest speaker Bob Dews, a couple of how-to presentations on "Bitters Making" and "Designing a Showhouse Garden," as well as a final event to be announced. So stay tuned!
Other upcoming events for the summer to be held at the Dovecote property in Cashiers, N.C. include this Thursday's "Miniature Fairy Gardens Workshop," which the Atlanta Landscape Design Examiner will cover online. And thanks to the owner of Dovecote, we will be able to pass along to readers a free booklet about how they can design their own miniature garden this year. The miniature gardens make a great summer project parents can do with their children or undertake on their own.
Dovecote's Summer Lecture Series is held each Thursday and begins at 10:00 a.m., with most lectures offered for free. There is a small charge for workshop materials, but participation in meal events or other opportunities presented in conjunction with the lecture or not included. For more information or to register for an event contact the workshop and lecture organizers via email at firstname.lastname@example.org or phone (828) 743-0307, or visit their website for directions.
