Summer fun for two SLP Orioles girls hockey players

A pair of girls hockey players from the St. Louis Park Orioles participated in the 2014 USA International Hockey Cup July 17-20 at the Schwan's Super Rink in Blaine.

Molly Arntson, a recent Oriole graduate who will be headed for Ohio State in the fall and Elena Basill were members of the Minnesota Nordiques that took fourth place in the 19U Tier 1 Division.

The Nordiques faced the Hailstorm in their opening round robin game on the 18th and Arntson and Basill scored a goal to lead them to a 5-0 shut out. But the Nordiques weren't done that day. They played a second game against OS Metro Selects Orange and came up short 4-2.

There was good news for Nordiques fans on Saturday when they headed into medal round play with a 9-1 drubbing of the East Metro Devils. Thought the two St. Louis Park players didn't enter th scoring column, the Nordiques got a game high four goals from Wayzata's Kaitlyn Klein.

It was on to medal round play for the Nordiques later in the day as they faced the Polar Xpress in the semifinals. Unfortunately, the Nordiques came up empty as they were shut out 4-0.

The Nordiques would wrap up tournament play on the 20th against the Lake Superior Stars in the third place game. They would get the early lead as Basill would set up the opening goal from Paige Johnson. Reilly Fawcett would tie the game on a power play goal with 3:25 left in the first period.

In the second period the Nordiques wouldforge ahead on goals from Crystal Sorem and Mackenzie Hietala. But the Stars bounced back with two in the third as Fawcett scored a power play goal :07 into the period and Alexis Joyce sent the game into overtime with 3:09 in regulation.

There would be no t-shirts for the Nordiques due to Alexia Klaas' goal :49 into overtime to clinch third place for Lake Superior.
