San Antonio residents have many ways to explore the Hill Country and the summer months bring a few more juicy reasons to pack up the family and head out yonder.

The famous town of Luling, Texas offers a watermelon festival starting on June 26th and yes there will be watermelon thumping. Thus called the Watermelon Thump it is a four day event set this year from Thursday June 26th to Sunday June 29th. The link above will provide all the details, plus there is free admission on June 26th. The activities and schedule will help you plan ahead for the live entertainment on the main stage, a 5K run, parade, rodeo and of course you don't want to miss the seed spitting contest. Luling is about 55 miles north and east of San Antonio.

Other fruity events to follow include:

Peaches in Stonewall Texas at the Stonewall Peach JAMboree held each year during the third weekend in June. Stonewall is located near Fredericksburg, Texas. Look for all the festival fun including the coronation of the Peach Queen.

Apples in Medina,Texas will happen the last week of July. There are orchard tours and you can learn how to make cider. It is a short drive from San Antonio and look for the Love Creek Orchards for more information.

Each fruity festival offers tasty menus and new recipes to try or bring home the fresh pickings for a family feast of your own.

Strawberries in Poteet, Texas happens in April so put that on your calendar for next year. The weekend event is filled with live entertainment, contests and a rodeo. Poteet, Texas is just south of San Antonio. For more details see: www.strawberryfestival.com
