The benefits of enrolling your child, the one with an interest in food, in a summer cooking camp are immeasurable. The kids that attend summer cooking camps end up enhancing their math and reading skills without even knowing they are doing so. They learn about other cultures and their foods. The children that attend summer cooking camps come back home with a skill set that lets them help with family meals. The children who attend summer cooking camps learn about good food versus processed foods and realize that their interest in cooking is truly a passion, a road they want to pursue.
Children, kids of all ages, from five years of age and up into their preteens and teens, are able to participate in the summer cooking camp classes.

Three local chefs in the Baltimore area teach summer cooking camps for kids
Chef Nancy Longo of Pierpoint Restaurant has been teaching children’s cooking camps going into her 8th year at Pierpoint’s 4 day a week cooking camp and is also doing 3 day a week cooking camps through Roland Park School’s Kaleidoscope program.
Longo stated, “It is great to get the children before they have formed any bad food habits and are more receptive to new flavors. I recently showed the kids all the ingredients that are in the taco seasoning mix and showed them how to make it from scratch with no preservatives.” Interestingly Nancy said, “I’m seeing more and more children going the vegetarian route.”
Chef Diane Bukatman of For the Love of Food based out in the Owings Mill/Reisterstown Kids Cook program has seen graduates going on to ProStart culinary programs in the high schools like Carver Center for Arts and Technology. A number of her graduates are attending the Culinary Institute of America pursuing the passion that was sparked and reinforced in the Kids Cook program.
“Currently there seems to be a trend, an interest in baking,” stated Chef Bukatman, “as well as the regular cooking programs.” This year one of their programs is based on the culinary competition show “Chopped.”
Chef Nikki McGowan of Cannelloni Kids Cooking School has partnered with the Howard County Recreation and Parks for a Children’s Confectionary Cooking Camp. Nikki shared, “It is wonderful seeing the children trying different foods like avocado, artichokes, hot sauces and even spices.” In a number of her cooking classes they will feature foods from different regions and countries and even have the country’s music playing in the background. “The children learn different countries' traditions as well as why we all should eat together,” said chef McGowan.
