Deryck Whibley has spent the last month in hospital after suffering liver and kidney collapse due to severe alcohol abuse. The troubled Sum 41 singer was rushed to hospital by his girlfriend after collapsing in his home and was admitted to intensive care where he was kept sedated for a week.
In an update posted May 16 to at DeryckWhibley.net courtesy of Billboard.com, the former husband of Canuck pop star Avril Lavigne revealed the details of his ordeal in a confessional titled "Rock Bottom." The 34-year old Scarborough, ON native admits that his condition was so bad that medical staff cautioned him that any further drinking would kill him, writing "If I have one drink the doc’s say I will die.”
Whibley, who divorced Lavigne in 2010 and has since suffered a number of career setbacks due to personal health issues and band member departures, claims that the experience has "scared him straight." The rock n' roll bad boy hopes fans will learn from his example and now urges others to "drink responsibly."
Since getting sober, Whibley says he has regained his passion and inspiration for writing music and claims fans can expect the multi-Juno Award winners to be back touring and have an album out soon. The singer's full post with numerous pictures of Whibley in ICU is available for viewing at DerykWhibley.net.
Sum 41 has not toured since 2012 in order to work on a follow up album to their 2011 release "Scream Bloody Murder," which is expected to hit shelves sometime in 2014. Drummer and band co-founder Steve Jocz left the group last year after a 17-year stint for personal reasons.
Did you know? Although Sum 41 has changed lead guitarist and bass players a number of times since it formed in 1996, Deryck Whibley and Steve Jocz had remained the core nucleus, along with bassist Jason McCaslin (who joined in 1998) until Jocz’s resignation.
