TOKYO -- New World beam champion Sui Lu was all smiles after winning her first World gold medal Sunday afternoon. After doing a long CCTV interview on the floor following the competition, Sui was surrounded by Chinese media as soon as she entered the mixed zone. She was happy to talk about her experience, talking expansively and making the media burst out laughing at one point.
Afterward, a translation became available. Here it is:
Q: You got one gold medal today but had a chance to get two. How do you feel about that?
Sui: "If I had gotten two gold medals at one competition it wouldn't have been interesting, right? I will try to get more from now on."
Q: You have just won gold on beam at the World Championships! Are you especially excited now?
Sui: "This is my first time getting to get such a good result, so I am very happy and excited, but not as much as I thought. I didn't get very good scores before this competition but I never gave up and just trained to do it like I did today."
Q: Is today's result is the fulfillment of your ability?
Sui: "Mmm...I don't really think so, but I think that I really want to prove myself in London."
Q: What do you think you will do at the London Games?
Sui: "For London, I am very good at floor exercise, and from now on I will put more effort in the other areas, to do better on the other events."
Q: Did you feel nervous before beam?
Sui: "The coaches tried not to give me too much pressure, but today I felt very nervous. I just tried to control myself."
Q: How did you achieve this result?
Sui: "Before, the mentality wasn't very good. And I tried to learn how to control myself. A good way to make myself relax is to do deep breathing exercises. Another very good thing is the coach told me never to want more, just to be myself."
Q: What else do you want to say?
Sui: "I want to say thank you to the people who supported me up to now. Sometimes the performance was bad, sometimes it was good, but all of you, thank you so much!"
Q: What will you do now?
Sui: "I will go shopping!"
