There may be a lot of memorable moments at tonight's awards ceremony, but the 2014 VMAs have already been marred by darkness and violence. Iconic producer Suge Knight, who helped make many of hip hop's biggest stars including Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and Tupac, was shot last night at the 1OAK nightclub in Hollywood, where Chris Brown was hosting a pre-VMA bash. The shots were fired around 1:30 AM inside the packed venue, which was described as "chaotic" by eyewitnesses. As the crowd began to scatter, security made sure that Brown and his entourage were unharmed and evacuated immediately. "People were screaming and yelling and most ran out immediately; the floor was covered with glass from everyone dropping their drinks" the eyewitness also said.

Knight was shot twice, although it is still somewhat unclear where he was hit. While not immediately fatal, they were seriously enough to require surgery, which he is said to be recovering from currently. Eyewitnesses said that he was able to walk after the shooting, and got into the ambulance partially on his own efforts. At least two other people were shot as well, but they have not been identified yet. Some believe that the shots may have been intended for Brown or for Justin Bieber, who was also in attendance.

This is not the first time Knight has been shot. He was hit in the leg at Kanye West's pre-VMA party in Miami back in 2005, and was also in the car with Tupac Shakur when he was fatally shot back in 1996.
