Police in West Hollywood, Calif., are looking for the shooter in Sunday's nightclub shooting where rap promoter Marion "Suge" Knight and two other people were hit by a hail of bullets. Although it is as yet uncertain as to the shooter's motive, Fox News reported Aug. 25 that police are working on the theory that the incident, which happened at a pre-MTV Video Music Awards party hosted by singer Chris Brown, might be gang-related.
Suge Knight was shot inside 1OAK on Sunset Boulevard around 1:30 a.m. Sunday morning. TMZ originally reported that the hip hop mogul had been hit twice, their information based on eyewitness reports and the word of family members. He was immediately taken to the hospital and underwent surgery. The celebrity gossip website also reported that Knight walked out of the nightclub under his own power and sat in a police car until an ambulance arrived to take him away.
Following the shooting, clubgoers exited the building with their hands in the air under the wary eyes of Sheriff's deputies who had their guns drawn.
TMZ later learned that two other people had been shot inside the nightclub. One was reportedly in critical condition. An even later update (just a few hours later) revealed that Knight was out of surgery and resting in the hospital's Intensive Care Unit. But instead of being shot twice, the big man had been hit six times.
According to Fox411, 49-year-old Suge Knight may have been shot in relation to the long-running East Coast/West Coast rapper feud. Knight, who was with famed rapper Tupac Shakur the night he was gunned down in Las Vegas in 1996, is working on a film wherein he will reportedly reveal plenty of inside information about the feud and what actually happened.
“Suge has been writing a pretty controversial film – lots of shocking details – about Tupac and exposing the truth,” a friend of Knight's told FOX411. “He also plans a reboot of his record label (Death Row Records) and there are still a lot of haters out there because of his past negative publicity.”
There also seems to be an authorized biography being compiled.
But Suge Knight's shooting might have been the result of something other than the infamous coast-to-coast gang war. TMZ also reported that there had been a fight at the door of the nightclub earlier in the evening when rapper Game and his entourage attempted to enter the club. Security denied them access to Chris Brown's pre-MTV VMA party and fighting enued. Some of the rebuffed entourage were still hanging around when the shooting started, but it is unknown if there is a connection between the two incidents.
Knight was involved in a somewhat similar incident in 2005 pre-MTV VMA party in Miami hosted by Kanye West. In fact, the legendary hip hop figure was shot in the leg at the time. According to witnesses (per Billboard), Knight was sitting at a table in the VIP room of the Shore Club when a man walked up and started shooting.
