Matrix Fights has announced Sam Oropeza's opponent Lewis Rumsey (9-10) has pulled out of his main event fight at Matrix Fights 8, due to a foot injury. Former Bellator MMA and CES MMA veteran Brett Oteri steps in to face Sammy Oropeza at ‘SugarHouse Casino presents Matrix Fights 8’ on Friday, Sept. 20th, 2013 at the Sheet Metal Union Hall (1301 S. Christopher Columbus Blvd).
Bellator MMA fighter Sam “Sammy O” Oropeza (8-2) is now scheduled to go one on one with former Bellator MMA & CES MMA vet Brett Oteri (11-4). The co-main event will feature another Bellator MMA fighter, Martinez BJJ’s Will Martinez Jr. (6-2-1) as he takes on the exciting and very tough Mervin Rodriguez (5-6) in what should be a very action packed Catchweight bout (150 lbs).
“I’m extremely excited to bring the next installment of Matrix Fights to the City of Philadelphia, with Matrix Fights 8”, said Matrix Fights co-owner Jimmy Binns Jr. “We have Sammy Oropeza, who is still contracted by Bellator taking on Brett Oteri. Oteri is an extremely talented fighter, and his record shows it. And of course Sammy O always brings a high energy packed house to the events.”
Sammy Oropeza is currently on a 3-fight win streak, not going past the second round in either of them three fights. This 215MMA supporter's most recent victory came at Bellator MMA 95, where he defeated his opponent via 2nd Round TKO, with a broken foot even. He has fought for big MMA companies such as Bellator MMA and Strikeforce (Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Silva) and is considered one of the top Middleweights on the East Coast. When asked about Rumsey’s injury pulling him out of the fight, Oropeza had this to say:
“We are in a tough sport. Injuries happen! I wish Rumsey a speedy recovery and I hope his injury is not serious. I never want to see a fighter get hurt to where it affects their ability to do what they love. When Rumsey is healthy, and if he wants to fight the offer still stands with me!”
Oropeza was also asked about his new opponent, the 11-4 Brett Oteri:
“I know Brett Oteri brings a lot of experience and has solid submissions in his arsenal. Here is the truth, whatever weight I fight at and who I fight doesn't matter, and it never will. What matters is what I am going to do on fight night and my attitude when I step in the cage on September 20th. Brett Oteri is not just fighting the man who spent 8 weeks of his life totally dedicated to this fight, who banged on the doors of exhaustion every training session, who left no stone unturned, who demanded more from himself everyday than anyone could ever expect. He is fighting a hungry young fighter who is confident and believes in himself! My prediction is still there I am going to have my arm raised September 20th. I see it everyday and I believe it!”
Brett Oteri has accumulated an 11-4 record over the last 4 years he's been a Professional MMA fighter. Oteri is a CES MMA veteran and has even fought for Bellator MMA. He has won three of his last four fights, with all three of his victories being finishes. Oteri had this to say about his opponent Sammy O: "I am so excited to fight such a high level guy. I predict that it will be an exciting fight for the fans that does not go to the judges!"
The co-main event, will feature two extremely exciting fighters in Will Martinez Jr. and Mervin Rodriguez. Will Martinez Jr. is a top instructor at Martinez BJJ and has fought for Bellator MMA multiple times. Martinez is currently 3-0 in Bellator, with 3 first round victories. “He will be a good test for me. He’s a well-rounded fighter with a lot of big fights.” Martinez said about his opponent, Mervin Rodriguez. “I'm alway looking for the submission. That's just my style. So I think this fight ends with me winning by submission.”
Mervin Rodriguez is an experienced fighter with some tough victories on his record. Out of his five wins, Rodriguez has finished four of them inside of two full rounds. Rodriguez won his most recent bout via impressive Unanimous Decision. “Martinez is a very tough opponent, but so am I.”, Rodriguez said. “I’m getting ready for a war. I hope people in Philadelphia are ready to watch me. Thank you Matrix Fights for this opportunity, and thank you Will for taking this fight. May the best man win, partner.”
