Swiss cheese and all things Swiss are in the spotlight on Friday, September 27 and Saturday, September 28 at the 61st annual Ohio Swiss Festival in Sugarcreek, Ohio in the heart of Ohio Amish country. Sugarcreek is approximately a 90 minute drive from Cleveland.
Ohio Swiss Festival Established in 1953 to promote the Swiss cheese industry and the village of Sugarcreek (known as "Ohio's Little Switzerland"), the Ohio Swiss Festival is one of the state's leading outdoor events. With four Swiss cheese factories in the area, Sugarcreek is the center of the Swiss cheese production industry in Ohio and is the leader of Swiss cheese production in the United States.
Activities at the Ohio Swiss Festival include wine and cheese tastings (featuring wine from several local area Ohio wineries and cheese from local cheesemakers), a Grand Parade (Saturday at 2 p.m.), a craft tent offering only handcrafted items for purchase, a Big Wheel race for the kids, a tractor pull, a kiddie parade (Friday at 2 p.m.), the Ohio Swiss Festival Queen contest and the Little Swiss Miss Contest.
The Festival will also feature a yodeling contest, the Swiss Cheese 5K Run and a Swiss costume contest.
One activity you don't want to miss is the Steintossen, a historic tossing competition where men's division participants throw a 138 pound stone while participants in the ladies' division throw a 75 pound stone to see who can toss it the longest distance.
Musical entertainment will be provided by top polka bands like the Hank Heller Ensemble and Del Sinchak. There will also be traditional Swiss music.
Food will be aplenty with items like bratwurst, homestyle barbecued chicken, trail bologna sandwiches topped with Swiss cheese, fried Swiss cheese and apple fritters.
Hours for the Ohio Swiss Festival are noon - midnight on Friday and 10 a.m. - 11 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is free. Parking is $5.
