Who knew cats need to check their breasts for lumps? And since cats can't possibly tell us there's a suspicious lump bothering them, pet owners need to be proactive to give them a 'buddy check.'

With October being breast cancer awareness month, it's decorous Sugar the Cat won the Purina ONE/Good contest. (www.good.is)

Earlier this year, her owner Jeanette Cereske discovered a lump on the inside of her right front leg after casually picking her up. Jeanette immediately brought Sugar to the vet and tests confirmed it was indeed breast cancer.

Sugar had a unilateral mastectomy, which is surgery performed if the tumor(s) are confined to one side - whereas bilateral is performed if tumors are on both sides. She also had two lumpectomies and 5 rounds of chemotherapy.

Sugar received a clean bill of health from the vet on August 5th, another happy survivor story.

Jeanette remains vigilant on checking Sugar, and from this experience with her cat, started Sugar Rub, a website that informs people about Sugar's story, as well as information regarding feline breast cancer.

Congratulations Sugar - You have 8 lives to go!
