Sometimes I think those on the left stay up nights just thinking of ways to gain more power and deny the rest of us our freedom. Obamacare figures into this category, as do Michelle Obama’s guidelines for schools, but one of the latest we need to watch out for is the sugar tax soon to be proposed by Connecticut Democrat Rosa DeLauro. DeLauro has been talking about such a bill since 2012, and she must have stayed up very late for years to come up with this one.
DeLauro intends to propose a federal tax on any sugary beverage that she has decided is detrimental to our health. She says she is “working on legislation right now to tax sugar-sweetened drinks, like sodas, in a way that reflects the serious damage they are doing to our health.” Oh, rapture! Someone else from the government has decided to take charge of my nutrition and health and admonish me with a tax if I want a Coke with my burger at lunch
The announcement reminds me of the new nutritional guidelines from Michelle Obama for school cafeterias. While her intentions may have been good, the result, as I have seen first-hand, are lunches that end up in the garbage because they taste so bad and schools losing oodles of money because of itSu. Whoever heard of serving a soyburger on a whole wheat bun without ketchup to a group of high school students? And where did she get her authority to propose these guidelines anyway? I don’t remember her winning any elections. But I digress.
So let's get back to DeLauro who said, “When a two-liter cola is 99 cents and blueberries are over three dollars, something has gone very wrong.” DeLauro has set herself up as the sugar queen and decided that if we, the great unwashed, wish to partake of the delights of soda, we will have to pay more for the privilege. Too much of anything is bad for you, so let’s tax water over and above what the government thinks we should consume in a day. How about beef, or peas, or mashed potatoes? Or better yet, Ms. DeLauro, go home and get some sleep. Leave the rest of us alone to make our own decisions without any guidelines, taxes, or penalties from you or your liberal friends.
