Sugar House public elementary and middle schools

The Sugar House community (as defined by Salt Lake City – see map of SLC Council district and boundaries and neighborhood designations), is served by the Salt Lake City School District.  Within Sugar House there are presently three elementary schools, one middle school and one combination elementary/middle school:

Sugar House elementary Schools include:

Nibley Park School, 2785 South8900 East, is the only school within the Salt Lake City School District to serve both elementary and middle school students, thus Hillside Middle School, 1825 South Nevada Street, is the only Sugar House school designated strictly for middle school students.  Both Hillside and Nibley have a school uniform policy, two of only a few schools within the Salt Lake School District to do so.

Although the Sugar House Community is geographically large, a population shift over the past few years to the southern and western areas of the valley has caused many of the schools previously serving the area to close, though, fortunately, many, or at least the spots on which they once stood are being used for other purposes.  These include:

Forest Elementary School once stood on a portion of the property where a Smith’s Grocery now exists at 900 East 2100 South

Garfield School, 1850 South 1500 East, is presently owned by Westminster College, which tentatively plans to use it for an art center.

Grandview Elementary was once located slightly southeast of the present Highland Park School, but was torn down many years ago.

Roslyn Heights, located at 2291 South 2000 East, closed several years ago, has recently become home to the Salt Lake School for the Performing Arts, a charter high school for students interested in music, dance, and theater.

Irving Junior High School previously located on 2100 South and 1200 East is now home to the Irvingschoolhouse Apartments.

It should be noted, however, that all of the public Sugar House elementary and middle and combination elementary and middle schools are new based on a decision made several years ago to demolish and replace existing older schools with newly constructed ones based on more innovative physical educational tends and retro-fitted to help offset potential earthquake damage.

Sugar House is also served by private and parochial schools including Carden Memorial School, 1452 East 2700 South, formerly the Highland Park Elementary, JE Cosgiff Memorial School, 2335 Redondo Avenue, and the Montessori Community School, 2416 East 1700 South.
