Sugar House Farmers’ Market finale on October 15

All good things must come to an end including the Sugar House Farmers’ Market, which did just that, for the season only, on October 15.  Still enthusiastic vendors and consumers enjoyed the cooler, but still mild autumn weather as they purchased produce and other unique and popular items offered throughout the duration of this new this season Sugar House weekly Friday event.

One of those the ever popular vendors were Utahns, Erin Atwater and David McFate, whose Happy Monkey Hummus stand was a  well-visited favorite over the past few months.   Shoppers who became acquainted, then addicted, to this out of the ordinary, but healthy, flavorful snack, snapped up a last minute supply.

Declaring the event a success and rightfully so, since a 9th and 9th shopping area farmers ’ market closed after only two sessions, board member, Amy Barry, cited positive feedback from both vendors and visitors.  Learning a few things along the way, however, Barry states some changes are planned for next year including:

  • Hours will be fixed from 4 to 8 p.m., instead of this year’s 3 p.m. to dusk, the latter a floating term, depending on the time of year.
  • Expansion to McClelland Street, in order to utilize the plaza space in front of the vacant, former Granite Furniture Building, possibly for a designated food court area.
  • Lighting, at least for vendor take-down, which has often left vendors, literally, in the dark, trying to dismantle their stands.
  • Securing a permit for amplification that will allow musicians to attract a wider audience and capture more visitors, whose curiosity may be piqued by the melodic sounds.

Sugar House residents will be looking forward to even more fun at next year’s Sugar House Farmers’ Market on the spur road adjacent to the Sugar House Monument from McClelland Street (1050 East) to 1100 East.   .
