Maui's Sugar Cane Train ceased operations on August 1, 2014.

The famous and well-known tourist attraction closed its doors due to financial considerations. For over 45 years, the Sugar Cane Train has steamed along a 6-mile track and served millions of visitors and tourists to Maui. The 40-minute ride was particularly popular with families with small children who had never seen or heard a steam locomotive.

"Not only the tourists will miss the Sugar Cane Train, but the locals will miss the daily steam whistle of the locomotive," says Elizabeth Boney. "We hear it every day here in Lahaina on the west side, and we'll miss it."
