Chewing on sugar cane cane a relatively
benign pastime and the cane actually
contains some helpful ingredients like
Vitamin B2 and riboflavin.
People in warm climates chew sugar cane like, well like candy. Because of its high fiber and cellulose content, many people say chewing the cane is a healthy alternative to refined sugar and can actually be good for your teeth, similar to the way chewing gum increases your drool and whisks away decay causing bacteria.
How much you ingest matters too, of course. If you're sucking down cane juice all day you can probably expect most of its health benefits to turn toxic.
Sugar cane juice is straight from the source and not processed into refined sugar, which is where a lot of the evil health things come from.
Turns out evaporated cane juice is a pretty good source of vitamin B2 and riboflavin and a much better alternative to sugar or high fructose corn syrup as a sweetener.
So let's review: Nature good, man-made "improvements" bad,
I've sucked on a few canes myself, mostly wrapped at Vietnamese restaurants where a small piece is hugged by grilled shrimp paste. It's kind of like sucking on a sweet piece of soft wood.
