Successful Parent-Teacher Conferences: Advice for Parents

See also

Normally, twice a year you are invited to your child’s elementary school to attend a teacher conference. This is a very important event where you can discuss how your child is doing, if there are any fieldtrips coming up that semester and if your child needs any special assistance.
Usually, you will meet with your child’s homeroom teacher and he or she will have information from any specialist teachers whose class your child also attends. If you would like to speak to any of the specialist teachers such as art, music, gym, reading or math teachers they are sometimes available during conference time. If they are not you may ask the homeroom teacher what the best way is to contact the specialist teacher.
Being polite is so important to get the conference off on the right footing. When you first go in, shake the teacher’s hand and thank him/her for meeting with you today. They will pull out your child’s folder and go over what they have accomplished. They will also show you their report card with their grades for the semester. It is fine for you to question the teacher about any grades that are lower than you thought they should be. It is also OK to ask the teacher what supports the school has for your child to be sure that they are being given every chance to succeed. For example, if your child isn’t doing well in reading you may want to ask if the school has a reading specialist that he or she could work with. Most elementary schools also have a math specialist if your student is struggling in math.Viewing the parent teacher conference as a time when parents and teachers can game plan a strategy for achievement for the student is the best way to achieve a meaningful and successful conference.
