Subzero weather is here now what?

There many things we need to keep doing while the wind chill whips around at a chilling -20 more or less depending on what part of Ohio you are in. It is day time and the double digit negatives are standing firm outside. It is time to cover windows, door frames and any crack or crevice letting in air so the biting cold doesn't take over your home.

The coldest part of the house is the north side of any home and the most vulnerable to cold weather damage especially to water pipes. Any pipes on this side of the home need to be checked regularly, leave water dripping steadily to keep the water moving which may keep ice from forming in the pipes. Just in case it freezes, it is wise to have gallons of water in empty containers such as milk and juice jugs. Keep those inside from freezing.

Once you've checked your home, it's time to check on pets and animals making sure they are warm and safe. Animals in a garage need space heat, wood heat or some other form of safe heating. Animals need extra layers of hay not blankets. If blankets become wet pets and livestock will freeze. Chickens may have a coop, besides the hay and insulation of plastic in every crook and cranny use an incandescent clamp lamp to make sure the light is keeping them from freezing. Bring in whatever pets you can like dogs and cats.

Before going out put on warm clothing, a hat, gloves, coat and a scarf to protect your lungs from the dangerously cold winds. While outside take a jug of water to make sure pets have plenty of fresh water and feed them extra to help their bodies stay warm.

Remember to check on neighbors, especially the elderly, and those living alone or are disabled. Make sure they have what they need including food, medicines and are warm.
