Don’t miss out on good theater and fun entertainment this fall because the mind is still thinking summer. Chicago’s theater scene is just too good to pass. Even though there are several excellent shows opening in Chicago don’t forget the suburbs and nearby towns.

Writers Theatre, Glencoe, is currently doing “The Old Man in the Old Moon" at its Tudor Court location through Nov. 10, 2013. A short, 1 hr, 40 minute show that is a collaboration with PigPen Theatre, it is an unusual blending of storytelling and folk music. Then, opening Oct. 29 at the Vernon location is playwright Conor McPherson’s “Port Authority,” an interconnected musing by three generations of Irishmen. Drury Lane, Oakbrook Terrace, is doing the Pulitzer award-winning “Next to Normal” now through Oct. 6, 2013. A musical drama that explores living with a traumatic event, the book and lyrics are by Brian Yorkey with music by Tom Kitt. Marriott Theatre, Lincolnshire, has Dolly Parton’s “9 to 5, the Musical” now through Oct. 13, 2013. It will do “Mary Poppins” Oct. 23, 2013 through Jan. 5, 2014.
