Suburban House Restaurant fire

One year later Suburban House Reopens -check it out

July 9, 2009

What a shock it was to see that the Suburban House Restaurant on Reisterstown Road in Pikesville caught fire last night. From what I can gather there was extensive smoke damage. Latest reports have stated that the restaurant will re-open.

Suburban House was the last vestige of the old world Jewish Delicatessen in Baltimore, serving chicken in a pot with matzo balls, broiled kippers and a good corn beef, cole slaw and Russian dressing sandwich.  At Suburban House paper placemats with definitions of Yiddish words laid underneath mismatched plates and waitstaff who asked you “what will you have hon?” The restaurant spans generations, those who went with their grandparents are grandparents now.

Suburban House holds so many memories for me from my high school days hanging out in the parking lot and restaurant, the place-to-be seen on a date to a breakfast with high school friends  the morning after our 35th high school reunion. As much as things change, things remained the same.  Our nickname for the restaurant was S & H.

Over the many years the restaurant has been open there have been multiple owners; the current one is Mark Horowitz, who was the kid who grew up living next door to me on Sequoia Avenue. My thoughts are with you Mark on your loss and for the community for loosing a slice of  Baltimore history.

Let's see if I can get this link up of an interview with a S & H customer HERE

You can always go to Attman's Deli on Lombard Street, known as corned beef row! It's open every day of the week. www.attmansdeli.com. It's only been around for 94 years. The ambience is different than S & H, but the food is always delicious.
