On Aug. 30, 2013, suburban Boston teacher Steven Chan, 57, pleaded not guilty to charges of child pornography, according to the Boston Herald.
Chan, a math teacher at the F.A. Day Middle School and gymnastics coach at Newton North High School, appeared in court Friday on three counts related to child pornography, reports the Herald.
According to CBS Boston, authorities discovered 27,000 pornographic images on Chan’s home computer hard drives.
His attorney said his client “unwittingly shared child pornography on his computer,” CBS News reports.
CBS Boston reports Chan is married and has two children.
Newton School Superintendent David Fleishman sent a letter to parents, which said the investigation involving Chan does not involve any Newton students, however, “Due to the media attention focused on the matter, we know that students will be talking about information that may make them feel shocked, anxious and angered.”
Fleishman also noted that school officials are holding a community meeting on Sept. 3 at 7:00 p.m. in the Day school auditorium regarding the matter.
Chan was ordered to be held on $35,000 cash bail.
According to CBS News, in January, another Newton teacher was sentenced to a 45-years behind bars in Louisiana for participating in an international child pornography ring.
