Honey is a healthier choice than table sugar. Follow these tips to substitute honey for sugar in almost any recipe.

  • Honey is twice as sweet as sugar so reduce the amount of honey by 1/3-1/2 (approximately 2 TBS).
  • Honey contains 18 percent water so reduce the amount of any liquid in the recipe by 1/5 (approximately 3 TBS).
  • Lower the oven temperature by 25 degrees (F).
  • Add a pinch of baking soda to prevent over browning.

Honey provides an all-natural energy boost. Instead of artificial sweeteners or high-fat creamers, honey can be used to sweeten morning coffee. It will add a healthy form of energy and a distinctive flavor.

Honey is also an anti-oxidant and anti-bacterial. It is beneficial to digestive health and gastrointestinal irritation. It also helps to stabilize blood pressure and blood sugar levels in people who do need to take insulin.

Local honey can help reduce allergy symptoms. Traces of pollen from local plants are left behind in the honey. When you eat local honey, your body slowly develops immunity to the pollen reducing the effects of allergies.
