Submission Tips for Web Directories

Listing your site on a web directory will sometimes help you get traffic. Firstly, there are people who will use a web directory repeatedly because it has high quality links. If your sites link then appears on the web directory, these people are likely to try it. Secondly, there are occasions when search engines will use web directories to search for results. If your website is on the web directory, then there is a good chance that your website will appear in the search engine results, and may even help you rank higher.

If you are submitting to a new or poor web directory, then they are likely to accept your website link to (if anything) help raise the web directories profile and/or traffic. If you are submitting to a higher quality one like Web10 Directory then you will need a few tips to get you accepted.

Firstly, improve your home page. Get things streamline, user friendly and to the point. If you sell floor cleaners then don't bounce around the bush with pointless text. Keep things simple so that people do not get bored or lose interest in your home page. Web directories that are as popular as sites like Web10 Directory will have hundreds of submissions per week, so they may not even get past your first page. So if you sell floor cleaners and the Web10 Directory people have to read two paragraphs before you say so, then they will not even get past your home page.

Secondly, remove excessive ad sense. We all know that they bring in a little money, but the fact is that it is little. Your website should be content first, content second, value third, adverts fourth. If your advertising is overpowering then people will not want to read and it will put them off. This makes your submission pointless, because if a web directory categorizes you as one thing, and you are too busy advertising, then their categorizing is pointless, and your application will be rejected.

Thirdly, improve your titles so that they explain your website in a few words. This is good practice anyway, because well worded titles result in more clicks from search engine results too. The same goes for descriptions. Keep them short and to the point. If people wanted to read they would buy a book. If they are searching web directories and search engines then it means they are searching for a product or an answer.

Lastly, follow the rules of submission. If the nice people at Web10 Directory have to finish applications or add bits, then you can't blame them for just rejecting the application all together. Also, if you are given the choice of submission category, then choose the right one. You might think it's clever to advertise your DVD players site in the discs DVD section, but the website admin won't think its clever, nor will the people searching the web directory.

Check up on your websites placement on the web directories that you submit to, and go ahead and use web directories themselves. They will only gain in popularity if they are clicked on. As you use the internet, you will find good web directories now and then. When you do, add them to your favorites, to save you having to search them out again the next time you need them. To add a website to your favorites on Microsoft internet explorer, click on the star in the far right corner, then when the favorites bit pops up, you will see the words "Add to favorites". Click that whilst you are on the website and then click add and you will be able to find it again with ease, but using your favorites menu.
