Subaru will spoligdht hybrid technology and a new engine in this concept car during the Tokyo Auto Show .
Subaru will introduce a dramatically styled gasoline/electric hybrid concept car Oct. 21 at the Toyko Auto Show.
The all-wheel-drive Hybrid Tourer Concept features a new two-liter, turbocharged, direct-injection boxer engine that will work with two electric motors, one at the front axle and one at the reaar.
At start-up and very low speeds, the rear electric motor can power the car alone. During normal cruising, the gas engine delivers the power. When the car is under acceleration, the rear motor kicks in to assist the engine.
The front motor, which acts primarily as a generator to supply electricity to the lithium-ion battery, supplies extra power when required, such as during uphill acceleration.
In typical hybrid fashion, the electric motor generates electricity when the car is coasting or under braking. In addition, the Tourer has an auto stop/start mechanism that shuts the engine down when the car stops in traffic or at a red light and automatically restarts it when the driver’s foot moves from the brake to the accelerator.
The powerplant is teamed with Subaru’s Lineartronic continuously variable transmission.

In addition to the gull-wing doors, the concept car features ventilated leather seats and Eye Sight, a driver-assistance technology under development that keeps the driver aware of upcoming traffic conditions and hazardous situations.
There was no indication if or when the hybrid technology will appear in a production vehicle, but it is believed that the engine will be offered in upcoming Subarus.

It seems things are getting very interesting in the auto industry. I would guess the first to market with the least flaws in this quickly developing hybrid marketplpace will gain quite an advantage in sales.
