Style yourself with trends from the 2013 Golden Globes

It’s awards-show season again, which means that the stars were shining bright in Beverly Hills for the 2013 Golden Globes. The show, which took place on Sunday, January 13, was held at the Beverly Hilton hotel, and the red carpet did not disappoint. This year’s carpet was a lot more toned down in terms of color than in recent years, but there were a lot more form-fitting gowns and plunging necklines. Trends spotted at the show included the following.

Cutouts – Several lovely ladies chose to embrace the cutout trend that graced Spring 2013 runways. Emily Blunt, Kristen Wiig, Kate Hudson and Carla Gugino all strolled the red carpet with cutouts in various places. Blunt’s gold Elie Saab gown, accentuated with minimal jewelry and a simple clutch, featured side cut-outs.

It goes without saying that red carpet looks are formal, but you can incorporate this trend into your wardrobe with a simple blouse or a dress with keyhole cutouts in the front or back. BCBG Max Azria at the Cherry Creek mall has several pieces for spring that can easily be incorporated into your wardrobe.

Mermaid chic – The mermaid silhouette was all over the carpet, adorning stars such as Taylor Swift, Jessica Alba, Amy Adams and Megan Fox, among others. Adams’ blush colored Marchesa gown was soft, flattering and simple – perfect for an affair such as the Golden Globes.

It’s hard to rock the mermaid trend in a city as casual as Denver. Unless you’re in a wedding or going to the prom, it tends to be a bit on the formal side. However, if you love the mermaid trend, add a peplum pencil dress to your wardrobe. The Guess store in Flatiron Crossing features several cute styles with peplum accents.

Sheer metallic – Metallics were present at this year’s show, but they were more subtle. Isla Fischer, Mayim Bialik, Kaley Cuoco, Thandie Newton and others all wore soft metallic dresses in blush, silver, champagne and gold. Cuoco’s Zahair Murad gown was sheer and sexy with a plunging neckline and sparkly embellishments.

This is a great trend to rock for a night on the town. It’s very easy to find a flattering color, regardless of skin tone, and these dresses don’t need many accessories. Nordstrom at Park Meadows features sheer metallic cocktail dresses from several designers such as Aidan Mattox, Adrianna Papell and Haute Hippie, among others. Sheer metallic dresses are also neutral enough that you can pair them with a bold shoe.

Red – Red was the color du jour at this year’s show, as stars such as Jennifer Lawrence, Claire Danes, Zooey Deschanel, Naomi Watts, Jennifer Garner and more sported variations on the color. Lawrence’s drop waisted, strapless Christian Dior gown was accentuated with a simple black belt for an age-appropriate and elegant look.

Red is pretty much a go-to color, as there is a wide range in hues, and it’s easy to find a shade that flatters. Take this trend to the streets with a cocktail dress from bebe at Flatiron Crossing. The store features all of the trendy styles, along with a posh, flattering collection from Project Runway designer Rami Kashou.

Celebrity style can always be tweaked to fit your own, and there is no better place to look than the red carpet. As awards season continues, stay tuned for more trend reports and tips on how to make them your own.
