What are 3 words that describe your personal style? Retro-global chic
Describe your project: I am a professor of Gender & Women’s studies at UIC and just published an edited volume, entitled “Laboring Positions: Black Women, Mothering & the Academy”
Who or what has been your greatest inspiration when it comes to hair, fashion, or style in general?
Everyone who knows me knows that I am a major thrift store shopper! That means I often buy/wear what I am emotionally drawn to versus what is on trend. It also means that I like to shop a lot but love a bargain! I really have to be flexible and open to experiment with colors and patterns that I may have shied away from when shopping in traditional stores.
Surprisingly, another huge influence on my style has been my children. I buy them clothes that “match” but they always put them together differently - boldly and defiantly! They mix colors and patterns in ways I would have never done!! Some days it’s painful to watch them walk out of the door looking like a rainbow attacked them but I truly am inspired and appreciate their bravado and fashion sense.
Finally, although I rarely follow celebrities I have to confess that I love how Tracey Ellis Ross and Solange Knowles dress and how they rock their hair! They always look fabulous and I would totally bite their style head to toe if I had their budgets!
What is your favorite way to style your hair?
I rock the twist out regularly. It’s simple and lasts longer than if I just wear my hair out. I am now able twist my whole head while watching just one movie!
What are some of your go-to products and product lines?
I love coconut oil for my body and my hair. I also love ORS Lock and Twist gel.
What winter style trend are you most excited about?
My neck gets cold a lot so I would say the infinity scarf is still high up on my list. I also take the train to and from work so I am always on the hunt to find flat bottom boots to wear with my skirts that are both fashionable and commuter friendly.
