Style, Defined: Melissa Scott

One of the biggest smiles in Chicago belongs to Melissa Scott, a young fashion designer and one of local design star Lara Miller's business managers.  Recently, Melissa shared her thoughts on style, fashion, and beauty.  Enjoy!

How do you define style?

We aren't born with it, that's for sure. It's something that develops as individuals develop and discover their true being. Style, in particular personal style, is a visual language; it's how people express or translate their thoughts, feelings, creativity and so much more. Just as beauty is eternal, I believe style is, too.

How has your personal style evolved?

My personal style has developed and has become more unique as I’ve gotten older and realized my creativity, and how I view myself.

Who would you consider your style mentor, and why?

Myself. I like to create different looks, and play with color. I dress myself based on comfort and how I'm feeling, and it varies from day-to-day.

What did your mother teach you about style?

That it isn't easy to achieve a personal style. Some people try a number of different ways to achieve personal style, such as copying someone else's style, or reading magazines like InStyle or Glamour. You'll never achieve your personal style taking those routes because they are based on duplicating pre-existing style(s) created by someone else.

What is your favorite place to shop and why?

Nordstrom Rack, because you find everything you need in one place; it's so convenient.

Who is your favorite designer and why?

Issey Miyake. There is so much that can be said about his work, but I'm more interested in his mind, his thought processes. His designs are wonderful to look at, and they strike curiosity. He's an innovator, something that I'm striving to be.

If I had to pick two, my second is Lara Miller. I started working for Lara in 2010, going on a year now, and the excitement I felt on the first day still lingers. On the outside looking in, people see Lara Miller: "The Eco-Designer," I see Lara Miller: "The Indescribable Wonder Woman." She wears so many different hats, while still maintaining a passion for life. She's a wonderful role model, an amazing artist, and a great leader in this incredible industry.
