Study links games to weight, mental problems

According to a story posted on MSNBC, a recent study by the CDC and two universities that is published in the October issue of The American Journal of Preventive Medicine found that videogame players tend to be overweight and at greater risk for mental problems.

Video-game players reported lower extraversion, consistent with research on adolescents that linked video-game playing to a sedentary lifestyle and overweight status, and to mental-health concerns,” said Dr. James B. Weaver III who worked on the study.

The study involved more than 500 people who ranged in age from 19 to 90 in the Seattle-Tacoma area. Despite the data, the researchers stressed the results were not conclusive and that further research was warranted.

[NOTE: This paragraph is my opinion] It was also noted that this study was started with the hypothesis that the researchers would find these results, which calls the whole thing into question for me. When studies like this are conducted with the aim of proving a negative hypothesis, they almost always find what they're looking for. I really don't see the point of all of these studies. If you spend a lot of time sitting down, you're obviously going to be overweight. And I can also think of a lot of more destructive ways to get a little bit of an escape from your life than playing a game. That's just my 2 cents.
