Job seekers are plagued by pessimism right now about the job prospects that are available, according to a survey conducted by Yahoo! HotJobs. According to the company’s research, 40 percent of job seekers believe that the job market in 2010 will be worse than last year and that it will take at least six months to find a new job.
It’s not all doom and gloom though and job seekers can expect a glimmer of hope: The survey also indicates that one third of employers do expect hiring to heat up in 2010.
“Job seekers and hiring pros don't have high hopes for a job market rebound in 2010, but our survey also shows many companies intend to hire more than they did last year,” said Tom Musbach, the Managing Editor at Yahoo! HotJobs. “It's incumbent on job seekers to remain resourceful, persistent, and positive to succeed in getting a job today."
Until these jobs are available, Yahoo! HotJobs suggests that people who are job hunting do something toward their job search everyday, and tailor every resume they send out to the job they are applying for.
And what should job hunters avoid? Contrary to today’s conventional wisdom, social networking is not a great resource for finding jobs. Of the job seekers surveyed by Yahoo! HotJobs, only 38 percent think that social networking sites are an effective way to find a job. Based on the response from employers surveyed, they’re right—only 23 percent of hiring managers use social networking sites to advertise their job openings.
