Well, simply put, when you study abroad you take classes in a foreign country. There are three main types of study abroad programs for college students: a short term program (you spend 1-8 weeks taking one or more classes in a single location), a study-tour (you take one class with a professor who guides you through one or more countries or regions), and a long-term program (you sign up for a semester or a year at a foreign university or American satellite campus where you take your normal university classes). Community service and internships abroad can be considered study abroad if your school is giving you credit for the experience, but this is the exception rather than the rule.
Studying abroad gives students the opportunity to immerse themselves in a foreign culture, go outside of their comfort zones, experience new things, and teaches us to interact with people who may be very different than our friends at home. Schools are encouraging more students to study abroad in order to gain valuable skills that are highly sought after by employers. In fact, over the past decade there has been a steady and steep rise in and in the 2006/2007 academic year 241,791 students studied abroad in every region of the world!
