Studio where Beatles' movies were filmed may be closing

Twickenham Film Studios, which was the site of filming for three Beatles' films has run into financial hard times and will reorganize and could even close, according to a BBC report.

The BBC quotes Gerald Krasner, an administrator, as saying the studio has been losing money for three years and that half the staff has already left. The studio was recently the location of filming for the new Meryl Streep movie "The Iron Lady."

The studio, initially called St. Margaret's Studio, was set up on the site of a former ice rink in 1913. Its first movie release was "The House of Temperley." It was renamed Twickenham Film Studios in 1929.

It was the site where the Beatles' films "Help!," "A Hard Day's Night," "Let It Be" and the music videos for "Hey Jude" and "Revolution" were filmed. Richard Lester, director of the first two Beatles films, has maintained an office there.

"Wonderwall," which featured George Harrison's music, was also filmed there, as was the 1965 version of "Alfie," which starred Michael Caine and co-starred Jane Asher, then Paul McCartney's girlfriend.

Other well-known films such as "A Fish Called Wanda," "Blade Runner," "Superman: The Movie," "Scrooge" (with Seymour Hicks) and "The Bourne Identity," were also made there. The studio also was responsible for many TV shows.
