If you are a beginner knitter or just prefer knitting mittens flat, the "Generic Mittens Knit Flat" pattern is a 'must bookmark' print out free pattern. Written by a Studio Ghibli Totoro fan who is a teacher and designs knitting charts for favorites Totoro and Chickenfeet Ponyo, this basic mitten knitting pattern allows for easy adaptation of her intarsia colorwork designs. The mitten pattern "provides you with a basic template for knitting in any size and with any yarn, but it requires you to take an active role in determining fit and design." Classic knitting teachers and designers like Elizabeth Zimmerman wrote and taught similarly, asking you politely to "man-up" and use
"a variety of basic techniques, experience what it means to adapt sizing and gauge to one’s own needs, and incorporate their own colourwork designs into an otherwise blank piece."
Most recently, it's been rumored on Twitter that today's knitters need too much coddling. Hats off to this knitting teacher for asking her students to think!
She is Brella on Ravelry and has kindly posted Totoro charts from the animated film My Neighbor Totoro, a chart for "Miffy", the rabbit and friend from a children's picture book by Dutch artist Dick Bruna and several more, all free downloads. While her darling Miffy mittens have no written pattern for the cuff, they are very similar, if not the same, as "Susie's Reading Mitts", and easy to use for any mitten size, adding the picot edge trim and lacework cuff.
