A shooting at a Roswell, New Mexico middle school on Tuesday morning injured three or more students.

Students were injured in a shooting at a New Mexico middle school on Tuesday.

A New Mexico State Police spokesperson said preliminary reports confirmed there were injuries as a result of the shooting, however, no details on how many or the identities of the victims have been released. Police confirm that a shooter is in custody.

At least two minors are being “treated and evaluated” at Eastern New Mexico Medical Center, said Brooke Linthicum, spokeswoman for the hospital.

The Roswell, New Mexico Police Facebook page stated:

“Shooting at Berrendo Middle School!! Parents are asked not to go to the school as it is on lockdown"

The school was placed on lockdown immediately following the shooting at approximately 8:11 a.m. on Tuesday morning and Roswell police instructed parents not to go to the middle school.

The Roswell Independent School District superintendent has since announced that students were being bused to the Roswell Mall for pickup.

USA Today reports that Rosewell has experienced increased gang violence in recent years and police have reached out to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for assistance.
