It seems that the big push in education this year is about data and “the number.” Administrations want their state testing scores to improve so that their bottom line and “their numbers” increase. However, the “data and numbers” that the administrators are forgetting about are the students sitting in the classrooms. Students are not numbers, nor are they data; they are human beings who are looking for a solid education and not just an education to learn how to take and pass a state test just so a school district’s “data and numbers” look good.
Raising test scores, teaching to the test, teaching everyone the same thing the same way will not truly educate students. The key to teaching students is reaching them. Moreover, reaching them means realizing that they are human beings who have a desire and a need to learn. Education should be about motivating students and creating lifelong learners. They are the future!
