Student sub-zero temps: A 19-year-old college student was discovered laying unconscious outside a neighbor's house in Duluth, Minn. last Saturday morning. The young woman had been in sub-zero temperatures and suffered an extreme case of severe hypothermia after being outdoors more than nine hours. reported Dec. 11 that Alyssa Lommel was dropped off at her home around midnight Friday after she'd been out drinking with friends. The report said the student in sub-zero temps was found by a passer-by who noticed she was on the front stoop of her neighbor's house about 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

The man who dropped Lommel off outside her house told police she was "walking and talking and didn't appear extremely intoxicated," the report said.

Lommel had the keys to her house, but footprints lead to the house next door. Police said the student's hands were three times the normal size when she was found Saturday morning.

Lommel's parents issued the following statement:

“We are grateful for all the thoughts and prayers for our daughter. We ask for privacy at this time so that we may focus on her healing.”

This news story of a student in sub-zero temps is a reminder that it's probably a good idea to make sure passengers, who are dropped off in dangerous weather, get inside safely.
