A student slept outside in sub-zero temps after a night of drinking and now she faces losing one or both of her hands due to severe frostbite. On Dec. 12, the New York Daily News provided some updates on the situation. Alyssa Jo Lommel, 19, was dropped off at home after "six hours of drinking" but she never made it into her house. She wound up on her neighbor's front porch passed out.
"She was wearing just blue jeans, Ugg boots, a sweater and light jacket. But she had on no gloves when a passerby found her around 9:30 a.m. Saturday," the New York Daily News reports.
The student passed out in sub-zero temps wasn't "falling down drunk" according to her friends -- but she did tweet about taking her 10th tequila shot. It's hard to imagine anyone standing after 10 shots of tequila -- but her friends evidently felt confident that Lommel could get into her house without a problem -- but that's not what happened. A detailed police report suggests the following:
"Tracks in the snow showed that Lommel, rather than go up to her own house, went next door. She reportedly entered an unheated backyard garage before trying to enter a locked car. The report shows that Lommel walked down a dead-end street before returning to her neighbor’s house, climbing a railing and apparently passing out on the front steps" (New York Daily News).
The sub-zero temps nearly killed the student who is still in the hospital.
