A Jackson-Madison County School student was in stable condition Thursday night after being shot outside school during dismissal Thursday afternoon, according to a news release from the Jackson Police Department. The shooter, a 16-year-old student who attends the same school, is in custody.

The department said it was called around 2:21 p.m. Thursday about a 17-year-old being shot outside Liberty Technology Magnet High School, located at 3470 Ridgecrest Road Ext.

Jackson police, the Tennessee Highway Patrol and the deputies from the Madison County Sheriff’s Department responded to the shooting, the release said.

The student, who received a single gunshot wound to the thigh, was taken by ambulance to the Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. The student was admitted and remained in stable condition Thursday night.

Police said they learned the shooting occurred outside in front of the school as students were being dismissed. They also learned it was a 16-year-old Liberty student who had shot the 17-year-old Liberty student.

The release said police quickly identified places the shooter might be located and began checking those possible addresses. The 16-year-old shooter was taken into custody at his grandmother’s Cotton Grove Road home, which is in Madison County, around 30 minutes after shooting.

Police said a Jackson police dog found the gun used in the shooting around 5 p.m. Thursday. Officers had been searching the Cotton Grove Road area in search of the gun, the release said.

Police said around 5:40 p.m. Thursday that the 16-year-old shooter is being questioned by JPD investigators and will be transported to the Madison County Juvenile Detention Center.

The motive behind the shooting remains under investigation.

Police are asking that anyone with information on this shooting contact the Jackson Police Department's Major Crimes Bureau at 731-425-8400 or call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 731-424-8477 (TIPS). You can also submit a cyber tip at jmcrimestoppers.org and click on “web tips”.
