Student shot on Widener University campus overnight, gunman still at large

At approximately 1:30 a.m. on Jan. 21, officials from Widener University alerted their students that a student had been shot at their Chester, Pa. campus, located just outside of Philadelphia. Students were directed to remain indoors until Tuesday morning.

The shooting occurred Monday evening, Jan. 20, according to Widener University.

NBC News reported on Jan. 21 that the student was shot while “sitting in the parking lot of Widener University's athletic center.”

Chester Police say the unidentified student was sitting inside his car in the parking lot of the Schwartz Athletic Center on 17th Street and Melrose Avenue in Chester, Pa. around 8:45 p.m.

Suddenly police say an unidentified gunman opened fire, striking the victim in the left side. The gunman then fled the scene.

After getting shot, the victim was able to call 911 to report the shooting and get help. The unidentified student was transported to the Crozer-Chester Medical Center, where following surgery on Monday evening, he was listed this morning as being in critical, but stable condition.

The student’s family is with him.

It appears that the student that got shot was specifically targeted by the gunman.

Widener Public Information Officer Dan Hanson said Tuesday morning that "all indications are this was not a random act of violence." He would not release further details of the investigation.

Chester police are actively investigating the crime scene. K-9 units tracked the shooter’s scent into the nearby Summer Hill neighborhood of Chester. Police also recovered a shell casing from the scene believed to be from a revolver used in the shooting.

Police are hoping to learn more from the athletic center’s surveillance video.

Police say they have not yet spoken to the victim and so far have no information on a possible motive or description of the shooter.

The gunman is still at large.

An overnight lockdown was lifted at 6:00 a.m. this morning. Classes were expected to run according to schedule today; but with six to 12 inches of snow expected in the northeast, there’s a good chance that Widener will be closed today due to inclement weather. Thus far, there is no indication on the university website that Widener is closing today due to snow.

Widener University’s Chester campus is located 14 miles outside of Philadelphia. The university also maintains campuses in Exton and Harrisburg, Pa., and Wilmington, Del.
