Student, 17, charged after accidentally shooting herself on school grounds

A 17-year-old student was arrested Wednesday after accidentally shooting herself in the leg at Grady High School.

Ms. Morgan Tukes was charged with carrying weapons within a school safety zone, reckless conduct, possession of a pistol by a minor and disruption of public school, according to Atlanta police.

The investigation began around 9:40 a.m. when officers responded to a call of a shooting at the school at 929 Charles Allen Drive, police spokesman Mr. Carlos Campos said.

When officers arrived, they found the teen who was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital with a gunshot wound to her upper leg, Mr. Campos said.

Police also found the weapon, a pink .380-caliber handgun manufactured by Taurus, he said.

It’s unclear what caused the teen to accidentally shoot herself or why she had a gun on school grounds. It was also unclear how she managed to get the gun, which police said belonged to her.

Police said the incident happened between two buildings outside on the school grounds.
