Derby races are the epitome of all things summer: sundresses and hats, mint garnished cocktails, ultimate tailgating, and studs. Whether you’re there to lay bets on jockey-mounted racing studs or bowtie and fedora clad man studs, the Derby is THE elitist place to be.
Just last weekend, the Charlotte area wrapped up The Queen’s Cup Steeplechase and of course the fastest five minutes of sports, the Kentucky Derby, will take place this Saturday. Break out your polished silver, don your decorated hat and enjoy this refreshing Derby Day Lemonade at your Derby party.
No bourbon purist would argue that sipping mint juleps from a silver cup is truly part of race tradition, but who says proper has to be stuffy? Our Southern ancestors may turn over in their graves, but our tailgate aficionado friends will be pointing their pinkies and sipping a delicious combination of fresh muddled rosemary and lemons with pear-infused vodka. Who knows, this new tradition may just evolve into something quite grand!
Derby Day Lemonade
2 oz. Absolut Pears Vodka
¼ oz. Triple Sec
Splash of Sweet & Sour
Splash of Simple Syrup
Fresh Rosemary Sprigs
Fresh Lemon Wedges
Muddle a sprig of rosemary and a few lemon wedges in the bottom of a rocks glass, add ice. In a cocktail shaker, over ice, combine vodka, triple sec, sweet & sour and simple syrup. Shake and strain into rocks glass over rosemary and lemons.
