Lake effect snowfall will begin across the favored portions of lakes Erie and Ontario this afternoon and evening, and a prolonged lake effect event is expected for these areas. Some of the flurries, squalls, and cloud cover may stray down the Mohawk and Schoharie Valleys into the Capital Region from time to time through Wednesday. However, of greater concern will be the bitter cold airmass in place, and the strong and gusty westerly to northwesterly winds that will drive wind chills well below zero at times.

High pressure will build into the region on Wednesday and move to our east by Wednesday night and Thursday. Winds should begin to lighten up a bit by this point in time, and also temperatures will begin to rise upward a bit, back toward normal readings for this time of year.

Another area of low pressure approaches the region to close out the work week. This is followed by unsettled conditions for the weekend. In addition, temperatures look to moderate quite a bit by this point, and may last the weekend being above normal.
