Stroke awareness

Chilton Hospital in Pompton Plains NJ is one of the leading area hospitals for stroke care.  The hospital has been certified by Joint Commission and the State of New Jersey Department of Health as a Primary Stroke Center.  24 hours a day, 7 days a week, no matter how much snow is on the ground or how much sun is shining, the BAT (Brain Activation Team) is ready to take on any stroke patient that comes through the doors.

According to the National Stroke Association, strokes are the number 3 killer in the United States and the number one cause of disabilities amongst adults, yet many people don't know how to recognize a stroke.  In New Jersey, about 2.1% of the adult population has had a stroke.

If you think that you or your loved one is having/had a stroke, just remember the word FAST.

F=Face, if any side of the face appears to droop.

A=Arms, if either arm droops or doesn't have as much strength as the other when risen.

S=Speak, does their voice sound weird, or are they slurring their words.

T=Transport, if you see any of these signs, call an ambulance via 911 or get to the hospital immediately.  Strokes are life threatening and need to be diagnosed and treated quickly.

On February 28th, 2012, New Vitality is sponsoring its first Hearth Health Fair at the Wayne YMCA.  Dr. Elliot Brown, a Chilton Hospital cardiologist, will be the guest speaker.  This is an excellent opportunity to find out more about strokes and how to take care of your heart.  If you would like more information about the Health Fair, just click here.
