Strive for 5 Challenge helps Central Virginia stay active (Photos)

There's a new challenge available to all who live or work in the Region 2000 area. This includes the city of Lynchburg and Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford and Campbell counties.

The Strive for 5 Challenge is part of the Live Healthy Lynchburg initiative, started by former Mayor Joan Foster in spring 2012.

The goal of the Strive for 5 Challenge is to be physically active for at least 30 minutes on five or more days per week.

The challenge started April 1 and runs through June 30, 2013. To participate, register at the website above and log your time daily.

In addition to individual participation, groups of employees or friends can register as teams. The competitions include individual and five group categories.

Groups include small: from 3-25 members, medium: from 26-50 members, large: from 51-100 members, extra large: 101-500 members and extra extra large: 501 or more members.

The top five individuals will be recognized at the end of the challenge. The organizations with the most hours in each category will also be recognized.

This is a great way for families to dedicate time to exercise and physical activity. Choose from the physical activities listed to record your time or choose 'other' if your activity isn't on the list.

Some of the activities on the list are running, walking, yoga, aerobics, treadmill, elliptical, martial arts, Pilates, cycling and various sports.

Jump start the challenge at the Point of Honor 5K. The race, which is the second in the Lynchburg Road Runners 2013 Race Series, will be held on Saturday, April 6 at Riverfront Park in downtown Lynchburg with a 9 a.m. start time.

The Strive for 5 Challenge is also a good way to get yourself in shape to meet the upcoming 100 Mile Challenge, which will begin in July.

The 100 Mile Challenge allows you to track all miles you walk or run outside of normal business walking, including miles on a treadmill.

By walking or running a little over a mile per day, you will meet the 100 Mile Challenge in the three months from July through September.

One of the goals of the 100 Mile Challenge is to grow more participation in the Virginia 10 Miler, Central Virginia's top running event.

The Virginia 10 Miler and the 4 Mile Run and Walk will be held on Saturday, Sept. 28, with participants from around the world.

The Amazing Children's Run will take place on Friday, Sept. 29 and will include a family-friendly festival at Amazement Square's Warehouse.

The first challenge has been issued to all living in our area to get more physically active. After completing the first challenge, the second challenge awaits. Will you participate?
