A children's book that not only explains the basics of tennis, but also preaches a healthy lifestyle to kids is the latest work by professional tennis coach Desmond McLennon II.
"Strings and Grips" published by Excelovate is a wonderfully illustrated, and cute tale of strings, grips, racs, and a ball that are all used in the sport of tennis.
McLennon, and his illustrator, Andre Short II let kids have a ball while learning a sport they can play an entire lifetime.
McLennon says his inspiration behind the 30 page book comes from his years coaching and playing tennis.
"My inspiration for writing, “Strings and Grips” was born out of my passion for tennis and my drive for continuous self-improvement," explains McLennon. "I expect 100% from those I coach, but that level of success comes from having a grasp on the fundamentals of tennis. I wanted to help children learn key concepts and strengthen essential skills early on, all while having fun!"
It's true, the sport of tennis can teach you quite a bit about the world we live in and about life.
"This sport has taught me a great deal about life and coping with situations both good and bad," explains the Toronto native McLennon. "The love and support from family, friends and people I work with on and off court helped transform "Strings and Grips" from concept to reality."
McLennon says if he can get one more kid out playing tennis with his book, it is worth the effort.
"Tennis is a lot of fun. When I was learning to play I loved doing drills, hitting against the wall, playing matches, and making new and diverse friends."
Tennis always has been more than a sport, it's a sport you can play your entire life.
McLennon not only introduces the sport to kids with his book, he also shows that tennis can be fun.
"It has always been my dream to write a book using my passion, creativity and love for life as the core ingredients," offers up McLennon.
This book is a great book to get kids familiar with tennis.
