Strike 3 call video: An umpire’s jig and "Whoomp! There it is!" has audience laughing even days after an umpire made the surprising and entertaining call on a third strike. What began with laughter from the bleachers at a youth baseball game has turned into laughter on Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube. “The Instagram video of the incident has since gone viral, with dozens of retweets and comments on both social media websites,” reported UPI on Oct. 12, 2013.
Strike 3 calls by umpires are by many considered to be one of the greatest moments in a baseball game because depending on the umpire’s character, an umpire’s reaction to the third strike might range from a small punch, to a grunt, to – as in this case – a little jig and a "Whoomp! There it is!"
Evidently, the audience in the bleachers was not the only audience that reacted with laughter to the umpire’s hilarious strike 3 call.
On Friday, former MLB ace Mark Mulder shared the umpire’s unique strike 3 call on Instagram and the video quickly found its ways onto sports blogs, news outlets, and, of course, other social media sites.
While a younger audience might be laughing mainly at the umpire’s little jig, the older audience might be laughing because "Whoomp! There it is!" actually is a phrase from the 1990s pop-rappers Tag Team.
Whether the reason for the laughter in the bleachers or online is the umpire’s "Whoomp! There it is!" or his little jig, most everyone agrees, “it’s one of the most hilarious strike 3 calls I’ve ever seen.”
