Stressing out at San Francisco International Airport? Try Yoga

Major airports have expanded their customer service options in hopes to attract more flyers. The San Francisco International Airport is no exception.  SFO now has a Yoga room.

The Yoga room is located in Terminal 2. While there are no instructors in the room, there are chairs and yoga mats available to flyers. To keep with the peacefulness Yoga offers, cell phones, shoes, food or drink are not allowed.

As a patron of SFO for several flights over the years, I can tell you that the amount of travelers and the length of time it takes to find your appropriate terminal if you’ve missed the exit can really stress out the mind. No one wants to miss a flight, and hauling your carry-on luggage for what seems like miles can add physical stress as well. This might explain why some flyers make a bee-line to the bar. There may be a multitude of Yoga studios in San Francisco, but the airport is actually a few miles from the heart of the city and layovers aren’t always during convenient business hours.

Having the Yoga room alternative could be the solution for relaxation. If you are in between flights at SFO, use the Yoga room to stretch out any tightened up muscles.  Relaxing your neck and spine will also reduce tension on your head. The Yoga room’s silence can help you clear your mind and make it easier take the next flight.  While cell phones are not allowed, consider bringing an MP3 player with peaceful music and play it at low volume. Even if you can’t dress for a full Yoga workout, a few basic Yoga breathing exercises and poses will do wonders for you. I've done a few Downward Dog stretches next to restrooms to relieve my lower back. Thanks to the Yoga room, i can do them in peace and relax my mind as well.

At least until after the next flight.
