Stress on the job can cause fire fighters to have health related problems not seen until the stress takes a fire fighter out of action. Being a fire fighter is a job that requires a person to be many things. There are many factors that cause stress in being a fire fighter.
One of those factors to be a fire fighter for the City of Mobile is you have to first pass a physical agility test. This test alone will show and test potential employees of the amount stress involved in being a fire fighter. This test will stress both your mind and body to its limits to see how bad you really want to become a fire fighter. The City of Mobile did not always require potential employees to take the CPAT test as a requirement for being a fire fighter for the City of Mobile. All an applicant had to do was have a high school diploma, a clean criminal record, pass an entry test, have an interview with the chief and then you started your training at the fire training center.
This way of becoming a fire fighter was used for many years but had a little flaw. Applicants would get hired on and then not be able to handle the stress that would be put on their minds and bodies. So many of the applicants would quit and go back to their former jobs because they could not handle the stress. This is one of the reasons the City Of Mobile included the CPAT into the hiring process to cut down costs for having to train someone and then have that person quit. With the CPAT some usually quit before they finish the test and this saves the city time and money.
Most people that apply to take the CPAT test either always wanted to become a fire fighter or just think they can physically handle the job because they lift weights and pump iron with their legs. It's usually people like this that end up failing this stress test on the body. To become a fire fighter and to always be an affective part of an engine company or ladder truck you will have to keep your body in a high cardiovascular fitness level. The CPAT usually only lasts a little over ten minutes and that is nothing when it comes to fighting a structure or building fire and ten minutes has passed and you have to get a second wind and push your body to its limits. Stress of the CPAT on potential fire fighters is just a taste of the amount of stress fire fighters endure every 24 hour shift while on duty.
